Enterprise Risk Management challenges have rapidly become critical operational and strategic factors for credit unions. Today, credit unions are facing a constantly changing set of strategic, capital, regulatory, compliance, and financial challenges as NCUA and state regulators have increased their emphasis on Risk Assessments and Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Programs as part of their examinations. This has left many credit unions challenged with implementing a fully integrated, effective risk management process with reasonable costs attached. With recent 2009 events at U.S. Central Corporate Credit Union and the NCUSIF, this session will discuss, evaluate, and debate the impact of 2009 issues, including:
- Capital Risks
- Earnings Risks: as compared to industry events
- Credit Risks: in credit union operations
- Risk vs. Return: considering adjustments to reflect inherent risk of loss
- Investment Risks: why ratings systems have failed to alert credit unions and effectively manage security risk
About the Speaker
 Robin D. Hoag, CPA, CMC, is the Senior Director of the Financial Institutions Group at Doeren Mayhew. During the past 31 years, he has developed a national reputation as a credit union expert working with more than 250 credit unions, ranging in size from $50 million to over $3 billion. He is an audit director, management consultant, and national speaker on credit union issues. His expertise comes from experience that includes credit union, community banks, mortgage banks, trust banks, and Credit Union Service Organizations (CUSOs), and covers a wide variety of areas, including audit and internal control systems, mergers and consolidations, forensics and fraud, and credit union risk management. He is also a nationally-published author on audit systems.
